The private estates are still used for shooting and fishing, and some are open to the public. One is Hirsel Country Park, a lovely day out for lakeside walks and picnics, under the watchful eyes of the estate's pedigree highland cattle.

Coldstream, about a mile and a half away, is a gateway between England and Scotland over the beautiful arched stone bridge, and the home town of the famous Coldstream Guard. The town has many fine stone buildings, a ruined abbey, and adheres proudly to its traditions, commemorating the 1513 Battle of Flodden and the Civic Week riding festival.
