"The Borders region has a turbulent history. In centuries gone by, it was the front line between England and Scotland as the two nations forged their relationship with one another."
Berwick's famous three bridges connect the north and south sides of the river. the most spectacular is undoubtedly the Royal Border Railway Viaduct, completed in 1850 to carry the East Coast mainline railway on it's twenty-eight high arches. The railway means that it's perfectly feasible to live in Berwick and commute to work in Newcastle or Edinburgh, both less than an hour away. The A1 is also a direct road link to both cities.
